What is your position on the board/what does that entail?

Treasurer. Because the hoa has accountants through our property management agency, my primary responsibility is making sure we are bring fiscally responsible and making the most of the hoa dues. I keep a 20 year plan updated to ensure we are setting aside the appropriate amount of money now so we do not have surprise assessments to the community. I also am always looking for ways to cut expenses while maintaining the quality of life we enjoy at MVP.

What is your favorite part of living in MVP?

Close proximity to Marta and Perimeter  restaurants/shopping.

What is one project/improvement that you are working on for MVP in 2011?

I'm working to get our water meters fixed and the billing rates updated so that we are all billed correctly. I believe everyone should pay their fair share and not being burdened by their neighbors excess use."

What is the most challenging part of your position?

Figuring out the future costs of big ticket items and then working them into the budget if they exceed the estimate.

What message would you like to give to the community?

Were working to keep your hoa fees as stable as possible. Our goal is to not have any surprise assessments and to only increases hoa fees in line with inflation ( a few percent per yr) each yr.

What is your position on the board/what does that entail?

President.
Orchestrate discussions among board members on property issues and act as liaison with property management company and other outside organizations, such as the City of Sandy Springs, Perimeter CID and vendors.

How long have you served on the board?

4 years.

What is your favorite part of living in MVP?

The feeling of privacy while being adjacent to great restaurants and shopping.

What is one project/improvement that you are working on for MVP in 2011?

Sidewalks outside our boundary along Mount Vernon.

What is the most challenging part of your position?

The overriding challenge is to keep MVP looking good with very limited resources.

What message would you like to give to the community?

Our residents possess a lot of talent and skills. We could reach our potential as a community with your ideas and energy.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

New York Prime in Buckhead for the best filet mignon imaginable.
In this area, like Seasons 52 for the flatbreads and diminutive desserts.

Trash Trailer

Get a head start on your Spring Cleaning! March 4th-6Th.

Also we are really cracking down on leaving items at the dumpster. It cost YOU money to have them removed. Last year we spent $100.00's of dollars removing waste that could have simply been placed on the trash trailer. Please help save the community money (and save yourself from a hefty fine)and keep non-household items out of the dumpster.

Coyote update from the MVP Board

The board has been talking to local government agencies, adjacent neighborhoods and companies that trap coyotes and there is no consensus on the effectiveness of catching them. We are examining the fencing to see if it’s possible to keep them out.
We are also tracking sightings to gauge the frequency of their appearance on our property.
Over the past month reports have been coming in about once a week, although we’re coming up on a week with no sightings.
Since this issue has only come up recently, we are not sure if this is a permanent or passing problem.

Below, please find information on coyotes and ways to discourage them.
Coyotes can be "be found in any neighborhood that provides their basic needs — food, water, shelter and space" They eat rabbits, mice and voles, which themselves survive on birdseed, berries and garbage. Coyotes are also attracted by garbage, pet food and small pets. Even large dogs can be seen as threats or possible mates. Coyotes have been known to take pets directly from leashes. Dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times for pets to be outdoors (on leash or not). Avoid areas of thick vegetation. If you see a coyote, pick up your dog.

Remove these attractants to discourage coyotes from visiting your property:

Outdoor pet food or water
Birdseed or food sources that attract small mammals
Accessible garbage or compost
Fallen fruit or berries from trees or shrubs
Shrubs, woodpiles, decks or any other structure that can provide cover or be used as a den
Some western sources say that in addition to keeping small pets inside you should let small children out unattended!

Coyote deterrents:
Haze coyotes when you see them. Every citizen can help both people and coyotes by taking action to re-instill them with a healthy and
natural fear of people. Shout in a loud and authoritative voice. Whistles are distributed free by some municipalities. Wave your arms, clap and throw objects at the coyote. Deterrents can include rocks, pots and pans, vinegar in a water gun, paintballs, air horns or a repellent spray. Contact local authorities to ensure that you are using a legal method.
Do not run or turn your back on the coyote. Face the coyote and back away slowly
Fencing your yard could deter coyotes. The fence should be at least 6 feet high with the bottom extending at least 6 inches below ground level for best results.

Teach your children

Never approach wild animals or dogs you don’t know!
If a coyote approaches you, wave your arms, stomp your feet and tell it loudly to Go away!
Call for help
If the animal doesn’t leave, walk out of the area, keeping the animal in your sight

Super Bowl Part!

The Super Bowl Party was a big success and a great chance for neighbors to hang out. There was plenty of free food and a nice crisp big screen to watch the game on.

If you missed out fear not. There are talks of putting together a monthly get together/party at the clubhouse and pool.

MVP battles the Buzz

On the Yahoo Group today there was a lot of talk about Mosquitoes. So I thought I would hunt around the net and see if I could find some helpful hints on how to avoid getting bit while we wait for CMA maintenance to address our standing water issues. At Dr. Green's website I found these 11 hints:

1. Mosquitoes are attracted to things that remind them of nectar or mammal flesh. When outdoors, wear light clothing that covers most of the body, keeping as much skin and hair covered as practical. Avoid bright, floral colors. Khaki, beige, and olive have no particular attraction for mosquitoes.

2. They are also attracted by some body odors, and for this reason they choose some individuals over others in a crowd. Avoid fragrances in soaps, shampoos, and lotions.

3. Many species of mosquito prefer biting from dusk until dawn. The problem is worse when the weather is hot or humid. Avoid playing outdoors during the peak biting times in your area.

4. Try to stay away from still water.

5. People who are highly allergic should avoid vacationing in the Everglades.

6. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using an insect repellent on exposed areas of skin. The most effective compounds are DEET (N,N-diethyl meta-toluamide), picaridin, and oil of lemon eucalyptus (Repel) I prefer the safe, non-toxic, plant-based oil of lemon eucalyptus. It does cause irritation if it gets in the eyes, but has otherwise proven safe. It has not been tested, though, on children under age 3. DEET-containing products should not be used on children under 2 months of age.

7. Don't apply insect repellent under clothes, or too much may be absorbed. Also, avoid applying repellent to portions of the hands that are likely to come in contact with the eyes and mouth.

8. 30% is the maximum concentration of DEET recommended for infants and children. Lower concentrations have not been shown to be safer.

9. The concentration of an insect repellent affects how long it will last, not how effective it will be when applied.

10. DEET should not be used in a product that combines an insect repellent and a sunscreen (so that the sunscreen can be reapplied as needed).
11. Other ingredients, such as IR3535 (Avon-Skin-So-Soft) or combinations of plant oils (Bite Blocker Xtreme or Burt’s Bees All Natural Herbal) can prevent bites, but not as effectively as DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus

Mount Vernon Plantation has a great recycling center. There are places for glass, plastic, and paper. Enjoy this service and help the environment at the same time.

MVP Labor Day Cookout!!!

Mount Vernon Plantation is happy to announce that we will have an end of summer cookout at the pool. The food will all be provided so please come and join us for a chance to meet your neighbors and make new friends. For those of you who would like to do so (and are over 21) please feel free to bring your own drinks.

The party will be Monday Sept. 6th, and starts at 3pm ET.

Tilted Kilt

The Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery is moving into the old Max and Erma's location. I am very happy to have a new venue to enjoy that is within walking distance of our community.

If you have never had the opportunity to eat at a Twisted Kilt, think Hooter’s meets Irish Pub.

The menu looks to consist of you standard arrangement of American Eats (Burgers, Wings, ETC) with a few Irish/Scottish/Generic pub foods.

The drink menu is fairly large and should have an offering for everyone.

Small Children and Pets Fear Not!

A few residents had noticed that our storm drains had extremely large openings leading into them. It would appear that after twenty years of re-paving projects and tree root abuse they had grown to an unacceptable size.

Thanks to Steve we were able to find an attractive solution to the problem with some very nice metal grates.

MVP's Blog

You may have noticed that MVP's news letter has fallen by the wayside. Every time I walk past the mailboxes and see a 6 month old news letter or an empty box I get upset that I (as a board member) have not found someone to take a few minutes to make a news letter or simply done it myself.

That said I will begin to try and start posting a monthly news letter as well as updating this blog with fun pictures and news about MVP and our area as a whole. If you have any news you would like for me to post or if you have any pictures please send them my way and I will be sure to get them posted.
